"Icons"
Dance/Choreography from Ziya Azazi
ICONS departs from Ziya Azazi’s previous works as it consists of duets and trios in addition to his usual solos. The experimental, repetitive and progressive approach that is seen in "Dervish" with the solos "’Azab" and "Dervish in Progress" is also maintained in ICONS, where whirling is the foundation of the choreography.
A further innovative aspect of ICONS is Serge Adam’s contribution. Adam composes his music in association with Azazi’s choreography, building a repetitive and progressive structure through electronic sound and his simultaneous improvisation with the trumpet.
ICONS is constituted of various fractions. Each fraction is built up to become an icon, ending with its own self destruction. These icons are connected to each other and reunified through a conceptual link. Through the choreography, music and the illumination of distinct colours, the body is represented here as a civilised organism related to concepts of ritual, tradition, passion and religion, involved in the construction and deconstruction of these allied icons.
